The Wolf’s Bane slot review (Netent)
The Wolf’s Bane is a stunning Netent slot with a well-thought-out horror theme
However, apart from the four different exciting free spins bonuses, the gameplay, features and payout table all feel a bit too familiar.
It is clear that Netent made a technical copy of their Wild Wild West video slot and has “refurbished” it to The Wolf’s Bane. The theme and the graphics are different, but that’s about it.
It is not unusual for slot providers to create new versions of existing slots, but we do feel Netent has done this trick a bit too many times over the past few months.
Early 2019, CEO of Netent Therese Hillman announced that the Swedish gaming provider would considerably increase new slots’ production. For the sake of convenience (or in-transparency?), she forgot to mention that this increased production would merely mean Netent was only going to clone their slots more often.
It is disappointing that the once mighty and innovative Netent is losing ground to smaller providers who know how to be original and creative.
Gameplay and features of the Wolf’s Bane slot
The Wolf’s Bane is a dark, creepy slot with wild wolves, anxious villagers and fierce hunters. Animations and sounds effects are spot-on and create a brooding atmosphere.
The game uses the classic 5 x 3 setup, with 10 fixed paylines.
The minimum bet is $€ 0.10 per spin and ideal for players with a small bankroll. The maximum bet is $€100 per spin.
What are the theoretical RTP, the variance and the maximum win of the Wolf’s Bane Slot?
The theoretical payout percentage is outstanding: 96.74%. This is about 0.50% better than the average online slot.
Variance is similar to the Wild Wild West video slot, low to medium. If you win anything above 250x the bet, then you know you have won a top prize. Wins above 500x the bet are sporadic.
The combination of a high RTP and a low to medium variance make The Wolf’s Bane a very suitable slot if you aim to unlock a (welcome) bonus. Don’t tell others that you got this tip from us.
Symbols and payouts
A fierce-looking werewolf acts as a wild and pays 50x the total bet for a 5-of-a-kind on an active payline. It replaces all symbols except for the two types of scatters (we discuss below).
The other premium symbols are the four human protagonists. They are everything but handsome. Besides, they could have a shower. Despite that, they pay out nicely: between 20 x and 50 x the total bet for five identical ones.
The card symbols J, Q, K and A payout between 8 x and 10 x the total bet, provided you spin five identical symbols on one of the ten paylines.
These prizes are pretty high, and it is because of the limited number (10) of paylines. You will soon notice that it is pretty hard to get 5-of-a-kind on a payline.
Pick and Click bonus
If you manage to spin three scattered bonus symbols (the tough-looking guy with the crossbow), you have won the Pick and Click Feature. Choose one of the three icons to win a mystery cash prize.
You get at least a win of 5 x the bet. The maximum win is 50 x the total bet.
Free Spins Bonus
It becomes exciting when you manage to spin 3, 4 or 5 scattered full moon symbols. Now, you earn 10, 20 or 30 free spins with a mystery feature. You get one out of the four following mystery features:
- Expanding wilds: at least one reel becomes completely wild.
- Regular Wilds: extra wilds in the game
- Spreading Wilds: Wilds roar and spread out into more wilds
- x 2 Multiplier Wilds: extra wilds with an x2 multiplier
It is possible to retrigger the free spins. These are automatically added to the current free spins.
It would help if you were patient here. Don’t be surprised if you need to wait for a few hundred spins before you get the free spins. The result is usually rewarding.
Our verdict on The Wolf’s Bane video slot
The Wolf’s Bane is a beautiful slot, built on a proven mathematical model.
Players who seek the real massive wins (say 1,000x the bet or more) should stay away from this slot. It is a low-medium variance slot.
We expect that Netent will score well with this horror slot, even though it’s a Wild Wild West’s technical clone.
We do hope, as avid slots players, that Netent will release some more innovative slots. Quality above quantity!
