It does not often happen that beetles play the lead role as magical beings in a story or as a theme in a video slot.
The online casino game developers at iSoftbet wanted to change that because the beetle is put in the spotlight in the Beetle Jewels slot. These extraordinary beetles are half beetle and half gemstone, and if they drop with the right combinations, they can deliver some handsome rewards.
But even a valuable beetle such as the one in Beetle Jewels video slot does not cure me of my phobia for insects.
When you spin the beetles in a winning combination, you immediately grasp why these critters are never romanticized in a story or theme. Every time you win a prize, the flapping wings of the beetles certainly give me shivers down my back. But I love winning more than anything, so I will have to put up with the heebie-jeebies.
Let’s inspect these colourful insects and find out what they are worth in the Beetle Jewels slot.
Beetle Jewels gameplay and features
The beetles in the Beetle Jewels slot crawl across the five reels and three rows, on which you can also find the well-known card symbols. There are ten paylines, and you can choose the coin value, anywhere from $€ 0.01 to $€ 1. That means that the minimum bet will be $€ 0.10, while the maximum is $€ 10 per spin.
The theoretical payout rate comes in under the average of online casino slots at 95.5 %. We estimate the variance to be between medium and high.
Symbols and payouts
Certain beetles are the highest value symbols in the game. The red beetle with orange gemstone is the highest of them all, and spinning 5-of-a-kind of these will net you 5,000 coins. The green beetle with blue gemstone is worth 2,000 coins under the same circumstances.
The beetles with the green and the one with the purple gemstone are the medium value symbols. Both give you 750 coins if you manage to spin five identical ones on the reels.
We also have the card symbols 10, J, Q, K and A, which are our traditional low-value symbols in the primary game. Five of the same ones of these will give you a maximum of 150 coins. That isn’t much, but even a low-value symbol can turn out huge payouts in the bonus game. More about this later.
Some of the beetles are hard to distinguish from one another, but the one that plays the most crucial part in the game is the purple beetle with the blue gemstone. This one is not hard to find as it has baby blue eyes. This beetle is the Wild symbol in the game but also functions as the scatter symbol. We will talk more about its function as a scatter later.
As the Wild symbol, he replaces all other symbols in the game. And you will also receive 2,000 coins with a 5-of-a-kind on the reels.
Beetle Jewels Bonus Feature
The purple beetle with the light blue eyes serves as a wild and a scatter symbol. When 3,4, or 5 scatter symbols appear on the reels, you are rewarded with 10 free spins.
During the free spins, a special random symbol is chosen from the nine symbols in the game. With enough high or low-value symbols on the reels, this special symbol will expand. It’s important to know that the Wild symbol doesn’t replace the special symbol to trigger the expansion. The free spins can be retriggered.
Our verdict on the Beetle Jewels video slot
This is a colourful Book of Ra/Book of Dead clone with a funny twist in the bonus feature: the special symbols change with every spin. If you are a fan of these high variance slots, Beetle Jewels will undoubtedly appeal to you.
The graphics are decent, although I found it hard to distinguish some beetles from one another.
But through the prizes you win, it becomes abundantly clear which beetle is worth what amount. The way beetles’ wings flap every time you win is a little issue for me, but that’s just me.
So, although the producers of Beetle Jewels by iSoftbet did not succeed in making me less nervous around these critters, I did get some enjoyment out of the game.
3.5 out of 5 stars.
