With Rabcat’s North Storm video slot, there is nothing new under the sun

They do treat us to a slot that is a feast for the eyes; the visuals and animations are phenomenal.

North Storm has borrowed many features from the Gonzo’s Quest slot, such as its falling symbols, progressive multipliers and free spins.

Having said this, we must acknowledge that it’s a beautifully designed slot that takes you to violent blizzards and intriguing Norwegian mythology.

What are the theoretical RTP, variance and maximum win of North Storm?

The theoretical payout percentage is 96.13%, which is around the average RTP of online slots.

The variance of North Storm is, like almost all Rabcat slots, medium. It implies that the top wins are typically between 250x and 500x the bet. If you get a win of 1,000x the bet or more, it is an absolute total miracle unless you spin a billion times, of course.

The maximum win is not specified, but you should see a 500x the stake win as about as good as it gets here.

North Storm gameplay & features

North Storm has 5 reels, 3 rows of symbols and 25 fixed paylines.

North storm relies on the so-called Rolling Reels Mechanism (Tumbling Reels or Avalanche mechanism). It means that winning combinations disappear and that the symbols above the winning combination tumble down, and that new symbols appear that make up a full screen again.

In this way, multiple winning combinations can be created one after the other.

But there is more.

There is an extra multiplier active, which increases by +1 after each winning combination. The multiplier starts at x1 and goes to x2, x3 and x4. If there are no more winning combinations, the multiplier is reset to x1.

Symbols and payouts

The wolf is wild and replaces all symbols except the bonus symbols. If you spin five wilds on an active payline, you are in for a win of 100x the total bet.

The Celtic symbols are the premium symbols, and these yield wins of 20 x to 100 x the total bet for a 5-of-a-kind.

If you get five identical card symbols (10, J, Q, K or A) on an active payline, you win between 1 x and 4 x the total bet.

All these prizes are, of course, without any multipliers. In the best case, all wins are multiplied by x4.

Free Spins Bonus

If you spin three bonus symbols on an active payline, you trigger the free spins bonus.

Now you are awarded at least 8 free spins. If you have more than one payline with free spins bonus symbols, you get more free spins (+2 for each additional payline). The maximum number of free spins you can get is 20 free spins.

During the free spins, extra high multipliers are active: these are twice as high as during the base game.

So the steps of the multipliers are as follows:

• Starting multiplier: x2
• After first winning combination: x4
• After a second winning combination: x6
• After a third (and more) winning combination(s): x8

Our verdict on North Storm

Rabcat is a very talented game maker and has proven to provide top quality slots. Animations (graphics and sounds) are spot-on.

Yes, of course, we have seen this game mechanism dozens of times before, but North Storm doesn’t come across as uninspired at all. They try to distinguish themselves by providing slots where you feel you are involved in the slot theme. The slot looks breathtaking.

It is a medium variance slot, but you get the feeling that you can land some serious prizes, thanks to the progressive multipliers and wilds.

Is it all groundbreaking? Not.
