Diablo Reels (Elk Studios) slot review

Diablo Reels slot review Elk Studios logo

Diablo Reels is already the 7th slot in the ELK classic series. What I like is that ELK Studios always manages to give the classic retro slot an original twist. Some of us (who were born in the eighties) probably played the Diablo video game. The idea was to outsmart Diablo, the Lord of Terror.

Diablo Reels slot – Gameplay and Features

Ultimately, Diablo Reels is a classic (retro) slot, and therefore it has a retro feel and looks.

You have two sets of 3 reels of 3 symbols each. Both sets have 5 paylines.

The low-paying symbols are the Lemons, Limes, Melons and the Red Chillies. The BAR symbols, Sevens, Horseshoes, Bells and Diamonds are the high-paying symbols, of which the Diamonds payout the most.

Furthermore, there are two kinds of wilds: the Stacked Wilds and the Nudging Wilds. We’ll get back to these in a minute.

The Bonus Symbols are the Diablo skulls, which look very similar to the famous diamond skull of Damien Hirst, once auctioned for a staggering 75 million euros.

Two main features: Stacked Wilds and Nudging Wilds

Once you start playing, you’ll notice that only the lower set of reels is active.

If you manage to spin a Stacked Wild (red coloured with the yellow letters WILD), you get a free respin.

The good news is that the Stacked Wild becomes sticky on the lower set of reels and that on the top set of reels, you get a guaranteed Stacked Wild (on the same reel). How nice to get double chances!

If you spin a Nudging Wild (blue-coloured with a yellow arrow) on the lower set of reels, you get multiple respins until the Nudging Wild (which “nudges” 1 position upwards per respin) disappears from the upper set of reels.

On the top set of reels, the Nudging Wild can get a multiplier of x2 or x5. Isn’t that generous?

By the way, it can become even more entertaining.

If you manage to spin both the Stacked Wilds and the Nudging Wild simultaneously, the Stacked Wilds remain sticky during the remaining free respins.

Then you know the slot will payout (especially with some Diamonds on the reels), as you already have wilds on two reels anyway.

But it gets even more enjoyable.

The free spins: 3 skulls are good for 10 free spins

If you spin 3 Diablo skull symbols, you activate 10 free spins.

The Stacked Wilds and the Nudging Wilds are still in the game. But the two significant advantages are that:

  • During the free spins, both sets of reels are active.
  • Only the high-paying symbols appear on the upper set of reels.

Furthermore, you can retrigger the free spins if you manage to spin the 3 Diablo skulls again.

Payout Rate (RTP)

The payout percentage of Diablo Reels is 96.3%, which is, of course, fine.

The variance (volatility) of Diablo Reels is medium to high

ELK gives a score of 8 out of 10 for volatility. Freely translated, the variance is medium to high.

Most big top wins are around 500x, with occasionally a higher win. In any case, the highest possible win is 2,500x. If you spin a million times, I bet it will land a few times.

Other ELK Studios slots with similar volatility are Ice Wolf, Io or Hidden.

Pros and cons

  • Entertaining theme and fortunately not as less scary as expected.
  • For a retro slot, the features are great.

  • The slot lacks some x-factor. It is and remains a classic slot.
  • At some point, it becomes a bit monotonous.

So, who’ll like the slot? And who won’t?

Players who like classic (fruit) slots and seek variety within that genre find it here.

However, the variety is more built-in the theme rather than in the gameplay. The Stacked and Nudging wilds are nice but not overly spectacular.
