Battle Royal is a video slot developed by Play’n GO with a somewhat sinister theme.

In this case, you have to take the name literally: this slot revolves around the English King, Henry the Eighth, and his 6 wives.

Henry was not a very loving husband: if he was fed up with his wife, he just beheaded her and looked for a new one.

Luckily you can digest this sinister slot theme easily; Play’n Go infused it with humour.

This way, poor Henry gets precisely what he deserves when he is chased in prison by the ghosts without a head – his unfortunate former wives.

How does the Battle Royal video slot work?

Battle Royal has 5 reels with 3 rows of symbols and 20 fixed pay lines. You can wager a fixed amount, starting from $€ 0.20 to $€ 100 per spin.

Regarding variance, Battle Royal is a medium variance slot.

You can win a maximum of 5,000 x your bet, although the chance of winning is less than 1 out of 100,000,000 spins.

The payout of 96.56% is excellent.

Symbols and payouts

Fat Henry the Eighth is wild and replaces all symbols except the scatters. 5 wilds on an active pay line give you 30 x the total bet.

The six wives of the king are the premium symbols. They are all stacked and yield between 15 x and 30 x the bet for a 5-of-a-kind.

Then we have the 4 card symbols hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs. These pay out the least: between 1.5 x and 3 x the total bet, at 5-of-a-kind.

Royal Flush

The Royal Flush feature, in this case, (unfortunately), does not mean that King Henry is going to flush his toilet.

This feature is activated at random moments and ensures that all low symbols change to the same symbol.

These similar symbols can be low, or if you are lucky, they all change into similar premium symbols.

Main Bonus: Free Spins of Pick and Click

If you turn 2 scatters on the 1st reel and the 5th reel, you win a significant bonus feature.

You may choose 1 of the 2 scatters for:

  • Pick and Click Bonus: Long Live The King
  • Free Spins: The Free Spins Heads Will Roll Bonus

Long Live The King

With this pick and click bonus, you have select boxes. There is either money in it or a golden key. Use the golden key to open the door to the next level.

Once you have found money, you will receive a cash prize. But that’s not all: one of the wives, now changed into a ghost, tries to catch Henry. If that succeeds, Henry dies of fright, and the bonus ends.

If Henry knows to avoid the ghost, the bonus continues.

If you find the golden key, you can also choose to end the bonus with an extra multiplier on all your bonus winnings.

Free Spins Heads Will Roll Bonus

During this free spins bonus, the wives of the king and 5 guillotines play the leading role. In advance, you may choose one of your wives. If she survives the bonus, you win an extra cash prize anyway.

After every spin, the guillotine on one of the reels falls. If one of Henry the Eighth wives is on the reels, her head is subtly cut off. As soon as the heads of 5 wives have been removed, the free spins end.

The longer you manage, wives keeping their head, the more free spins you win. It is also true that every wife, who is beheaded, continues as a stacked wild symbol in the game.

When the free spins bonus has expired, you get 1 extra chance to win a second bonus feature.

Henry may try to behead the remaining lady in the last attempt. You will win access to the Long Live The King Bonus if you succeed.

If not, the bonus round is truly finished.

Our verdict on Battle Royal?

Usually, we are big fans of Play’n GO slots, but we couldn’t warm up to Battle Royal.

Only the free spins bonus can pay out nicely, but it is often very disappointing.

Furthermore, the Royal Flush feature, 9 out of 10 x, is a let-down: either low symbols or symbols that do not connect are spun.

This slot contains quite a few beautiful and innovative features, but somehow it all remains a bit boring.
